Being a student is an expensive business, and taking a break from it all sometimes is important. Getting from A to B and back again isn’t always as cheap as we’d like, but with a bit of knowledge it’s possible to save a fair bit, get that trip home to mum and even take a weekend away with your mates sometimes too!
So here is some advice on deals on travel for students.
Megabus & megatrain
Megabus offers cheap travel within the UK by bus and train. Seat prices start from as little as £1, and price is varied according to demand. The best prices are offered to people who make reservations early, or who are choosing less popular journeys. There is a one off 50p booking fee for all reservations whether made by internet or telephone, but calling by phone does cost 60p per minute so it’s a lot better to use the internet if you can. Bookings can be made up to 45 days in advance.
You can’t take a dog (except guide dogs), you can’t take a bicycle, and you’re only allowed one piece of luggage per passenger weighing no more than 20kg and no bigger than a standard suitcase. Be aware that if you bring too much luggage, you could be refused travel, so best not to bring along all your washing for mum to do! Wheelchair access is available on trains, but you need to contact them in advance of travelling and after you’ve purchased your ticket. Fully accessible busses are being introduced at the moment, so check these before you book if you need wheelchair access, and call their helpline for extra help and advice.
National Express
National Express offer a young person’s coach card for anyone aged 16-26 and anyone else who’s a full time student regardless of age. It can provide you with up to 30% off the cost of your travel.
You pay £10 for one year, or £25 for three years for the card, and as well as up to 30% off your coach travel you also get access to special card holder exclusive offers. National express cards can be used to book over the phone, over the counter or online making them very easy to use.
Discount Rail Cards
The 16-25 rail card costs £26 for one year, or £65 for a three year card. It gives you 1/3 off the cost of rail fares around Britain for one or three years. This applies to both standard and first class tickets, and can be used anytime on weekends, public holidays and during the week. It is worth noting though that if you use it to travel before 10am Monday to Friday, you will have to pay a minimum fare (except during July and August). The three year card is a new option that’s not long been available, and it will save you £13 over the three years compared to the one year card. You can buy the three year card up until the day before your 24th birthday meaning that you can actually keep getting cheaper fares right up till the day before you turn 27!
